When you’re planning to sell your car, junk or otherwise, it’s important to be familiar with some of the most common mistakes people make when trying to sell their vehicle on their own. Making these mistakes can cost you time and money, not to mention the fact that they’ll make you look unprofessional and unreliable. 1) Don’t be hasty
The point is that selling your car for cash doesn’t have to be difficult. But if you rush into things, you’re more likely to mess up and lose money on what could be a pretty good deal. So go into it with confidence and with realistic expectations, knowing that you’re doing everything possible—and maybe even more than necessary—to ensure success.
2) Get your vehicle assessed
If you want to get your vehicle sold, it’s important that you get an accurate quote of its current value. This will help you determine how much money you can reasonably expect to earn from selling it.
3) Negotiate a good price up front
If you’re asking for $4,000 for your junk car and are offered $3,500, walk away. Unless you’re willing to take less—which you may have to do if it’s not running—try not to accept too low of an offer. If they want it badly enough they might come back with another bid. It’s better not accepting an offer than settling for something lower than what you deserve.
4) Choose the right buyer
Do your research and choose a buyer who will pay you cash for your junk car and haul it away. Research local junkyards, tow truck companies, used car dealerships and auto auctions.
5) Use an advertisement platform with both online and offline presence
Craigslist, Autotrader, Kijiji, and eBay have been around for years and have excellent customer service. Craigslist is one of my favorite ways to advertise because you can choose your price and buyers often come directly to you which means no fee!
6) Prepare all necessary documents before you meet buyers
If you don’t want to be scammed, it’s best not to meet with buyers without having all the necessary documents prepared.
7) Use online tools when dealing with buyers
To get an accurate estimate of your car’s worth, be sure to use online resources such as Kelley Blue Book or Edmunds. These tools also make it easy for you to find potential buyers.
8) Ask for proof of funds
To avoid fraud, you should always ask your buyer for proof of funds.
9) Be very specific about how you want your car removed after the sale has gone through
A lot of people lose money because they’re not specific enough about how they want their junk car removed. Make sure that you choose your junk car removal service carefully, and tell them exactly what you want to be done with your car.
10) Get paid quickly!
Cash is king, especially when you’re selling your old junker. Make sure you’re dealing with a reputable buyer that can pay you quickly and at least give you some of what your car is worth. The last thing you want after having to deal with an annoying old vehicle for years is to wait months for your payment. Having patience will only make it harder on you if there are any problems or delays, so try and stay on top of things if possible.
