Inspecting the fluid level of your transmission is a relatively simple task, although it may be slightly more complex than checking your oil. It should be noted that this procedure is only relevant for automatic transmissions and that certain newer cars may not have dipsticks or dipstick tubes for checking and adding transmission fluid.
With the engine turned off, remove the transmission dipstick in the same manner as you would when checking the oil. Take note of any instructions printed on the dipstick, as some vehicles may have separate levels for cold and hot fluid, or specify the preferred method of checking.
Generally, it will also advise checking the level with the vehicle in Park or Neutral, with or without the engine running. If the dipstick does not have any instructions, refer to the owner’s manual. However, it is usually recommended to check the fluid level with the engine running, in Park or Neutral, with the parking brake engaged, and the engine warmed up to operating temperature.
To begin, determine the appropriate procedure for checking the fluid level of your vehicle. Typically, most vehicles use the method of operating in the Park while running, which we will utilize as an example here. It is important to confirm that your vehicle is fully warmed up before proceeding.
Once it is, engage the parking brake, open the hood, and remove the dipstick. Take caution around any moving engine parts and avoid loose clothing. Using a lint-free rag, thoroughly wipe the dipstick to ensure there is no residue left behind.
Re-insert the dipstick completely and then remove it again. If the fluid level appears low, add more fluid, but ensure that you are using the recommended type by the manufacturer. Using the wrong transmission fluid can have disastrous consequences.
After achieving the correct fluid level, take the vehicle for a drive, return it to Park, and repeat the process to confirm readiness. Be mindful not to overfill the transmission, as high fluid levels can be more hazardous than low levels.
It is always a wise decision to inspect the transmission fluid level while checking the levels of oil and other fluids. However, if your transmission is exhibiting unusual behavior, it is crucial to do so without delay.
If the transmission is experiencing slipping or improper shifting or fails to engage when shifting into drive or reverse, the initial step should be to verify the transmission fluid level. Do not procrastinate as driving with low fluid can potentially harm an automatic transmission.
